Can I Potty Train My Sugar Glider

Yes and no. No, you cannot potty train a sugar glider in the sense that you can a dog or a cat. You can train a dog to use newspapers or go outdoors, or a cat to use a little box, or if it is allowed, go outside, but your sugar glider will eliminate wherever it is at the moment it needs to go. However…

Yes, you can in effect, ‘train yourself’ to know when your sugar glider is most likely going to need to potty and make sure it is where you prefer it to occur rather than on your shirt, or on a household item. Your sugar glider will react much like you do yourself. When they get up from a nap they will usually need to potty. Immediately when you pick them up from their sleeping time take them to the area you wish them to go, which could be over a napkin, or over a trash can. Hold them over the area and help to keep their tail out of the way.

Sugar gliders do not produce much at each time so the mess is very minimal. So much so that a simple napkin, or paper towel underneath them is more than ample to absorb the few drops of urine, and few tiny hard droppings. Their waste products are very easy to clean up after, and not soft, or mushy like a dog or cat’s can be.

Sugar gliders will have to eliminate every two or three hours when awake and playing. Watching for the signs that you will soon learn to spot and taking them to the area where you wish them to go will become an easy habit for you. So while you can’t exactly ‘train’ your sugar glider, you can easily train yourself and all will be happy, and clean in your sugar glider household.
