The Problem with Tight Poker Play
As I’ve played poker throughout the years, I’ve had a hard time finding out what play style works best for me. I’ve gone through different styles, trying to emulate my favorite professional poker players, but it was difficult trying to fit my personality into someone else’s particular style. I eventually settled into playing tight. I’d fold hand after hand, trying to hang onto my chips for as long as possible, but it led to another problem-my reticence to play bad hands bled over into into my reaction to playing good hands. Even if I had a good hand, I’d be hesitant to play it. I found my self folding countless hands that would have won if I’d had the nerve. Playing tight led to more sitting time, but it almost never led to winning cash, not to mention that it can get pretty boring to fold hand after hand.
Another problem with playing tight poker is that people caught on to my style pretty quickly. On the very rare occasions where I’d find a hand that I was comfortable playing, I’d never make any cash. People knew that I would only play with a solid hand, so they’d fold right away. Nothing disappoints like a full house that only wins the blinds.
