Broadband Users Will Cross 500 Million Next Year, Says Survey
Futuresource Consulting has just released a survey indicating the number of Broadband users worldwide would cross the half-billion mark in 2010. The survey is a comprehensive study of broadband usage and penetration across the world.
The study claims that subscriber additions from the developing world are increasing at a rapid pace, especially in Africa and the Middle East. User base in these two locations is expected to grow by as much as a third by 2014, says the report. In contrast, the developed nations have seen a slowdown in broadband subscriber growth as penetration is now at fairly high levels.
India is another high-growth area, claims Patrick Pfandler, Senior Market Analyst. The country has seen rapid growth in broadband networks and is looking at a five-fold jump in user base, to 25 million in the next 3 years. India currently has just over 2% penetration in the country for broadband services, a figure that is rapidly going up, he said.
On technology platforms, the report states that 60% of the broadband networks were driven by DSL and 20% by cable technology. The fastest download speeds have been recorded in Japan and South Korea, a mind-blowing 30 Mbps on average. Britain on the other hand manages an average broadband speed of just around 3.6 Mbps, based on a recent report by Ofcom.
