£3m Proposed For Rural Broadband Upgrade
A proposed £3m upgrade may change the way rural Britain gets virtual information and connects to the world. British Telecom is conducting talks with the government of Scotland to initiate massive improvements to the broadband networks among rural and remote areas.
A site analysis has shown that some of these locations do not have easy access to internet connections. These issues will be addressed by the upgrade if indeed it is approved and implemented.
Around 50 smaller telephone exchanges are poised to receive benefits from the proposed upgrade. These exchanges will be identified by BT in conjunction with the government of Scotland. Findings are expected to be presented in a week.
Finance Secretary Swinney welcomed the proposal, which will put rural areas on par with urban Scotland, providing them access to world-class tools and information via the internet. He added that the solution had been found after exploring many options, and that the Borders are the main targets of the upgrade.
There may be improvements and enhancements all over the UK (click to compare broadband) with the objective of laying the foundation for ’super fast’ internet in accordance with Digital Britain minister Timms’ proposal. However, Mr Timms has to get his proposal for a 50p increase to every telephone bill cleared by the parliament in the face of heavy Conservative opposition.
