Law Firm Advisory on Preventing Slips in Winter
Mace & Jones, a law firm from the
One of their lawyers, Jeremy Bradshaw, stated that such falls cause 33% of accidents in offices. He was of the opinion that graveling or using salt in parking areas has to be done and one has to be careful about places of greater risk, like sloping places or steps, and to prevent water entering into the building where the burnished floor can cause tripping. A good suggestion is to use mats that absorb water inside the building and to check them periodically to see that they are dry and capable of absorbing water at all times.
Bradshaw also stated that the bosses or building supervisors must keep on record the fact that such processes is in place and are also being practically applied to all situations. This is because if the bosses fail to prevent such mishaps from happening, then they will have to pay damages to the injured workers. Unless they have such records, they cannot prove to the judges that they had a system in place to prevent such mishaps, and their liability to pay damages will be that much higher.
Putting out some numbers, Bradshaw said that there were 23,797 minor accidents and 10, 368 grave accidents that occurred in 2008-09 due to such falls, and at a minimum, people had to stay away from work for three days. Therefore, it is best for everyone if such rudimentary safety measures are in place, suggested Bradshaw.
